Fancy a cold swim on Christmas Day in Dublin Bay?

This was hundreds of brave people do and have done for over a hundred years on Christmas Day.
They take part in the "Forty Foot" jump/dive/swim at Sandycove south of Dublin, close to the famous Jame Joyce Tower. We have posted a few ohotos on the euro-rentavilla.com page entitled "Dublin at Christmas".
Find out more here and take a look at the photos of those brave people. There was a lot of Ice about on December 25th 2009 and the sea was very cold. A good excuse to have a drink of Bushmills, Jameson or Paddy whisky after jumping in, or even watching!

Salmon Cottage nestles down at the natural harbor in the sleepy village of Kinghorn on Fife's east coast. A few short steps from the cottage door will take you to the beach and onto the sea shore of the magnificent Firth of Forth.

Adventurous sailors might like to visit Inchkieth Island for fishing trips, picnics or just to explore this rugged island once known as the "Island of Horses".

Now that the industries have long since gone from the area and times are quieter the old town and shoreline have been declared a conservation area and designated a site of important scientific interest for watching and studying the rich and varied wildlife. Seals, porpoise and many different sea birds including Eider ducks, Guillemots, razorbills, Great Kites and Gannets inhabit the area and rare flora and fauna are to be found all along the Fife coastal path route.

The parish church with its large Venetian window is a short stroll from the cottage and the ancient ruins and old stones that lie within the court yard were first mentioned in an ancient charter that dates from 1232. The nearby King Alexander 3rd of Scotland memorial tells how, one dark and stormy night in 1286 the King's horse was separated from his companions and he plunged to his death from the cliffs above while riding to be with his young bride.

Kinghorn and the surrounding areas are steeped in history and folklore and tales abound of Viking, Danish and Norwegian raids on Scotland's East coast. Viking remains were unearthed when the RNLI lifeboat station was built nearby.

Activities - What to do - where to go

Kinghorn has its own 18 hole course Within walking distance from the cottage and the Royal & Ancient St. Andrews course is only short distance up the coast. There is a further twenty plus 18 hole courses to choose from in the surrounding areas.

Golfing ,snorkeling, fishing, bird watching, sailing and wind surfing, are all common activities all along the Fife coast. Walk or cycle the well sign posted Fife coastal path route, plan short or long routes along the coastal path to the Forth bridges or right round the coast to St. Andrews and beyond.

Why not leave the car at the cottage and take a train ride from the small Kinghorn Station across the famous Forth Bridge into Edinburgh to visit the many historic sights including Edinburgh castle, Sir Walter Scott's monument, the British museum and the new Scottish parliament building. Or browse around the trendy shops and cafe bars on and around Princess Street. The journey takes around 40 minutes and an off peak same day return ticket costs around £5.
