What a welcome to England

England needs tourists, the Olympics visitors left many months ago and tourism needs to flourish. Last weekend a friend visited us.

She flew to London Luton, now that is not a welcome to England that you would expect. Had she needed a trolley for her baggage unlike most other airports where you put in a coin and get it back, you don't at Luton, they keep it.

My wife went to pay the rather high car park bill for 10 minutes, had she paid with a credit card she would have to pay a fee!

On the way back on Sunday afternoon, unless you drop someone off a 5 minute walk away from the terminal, you have to pay £1. What a difference at France's number 2 airport -Aéroport Nice Côte d'Azur.

Nice Airport photo cotedazurrental.com
If you are meeting someone, you will get several minutes FREE parking and dropping them, well you just drop them off at the "Kiss and Fly" so simple and very welcoming.

On Saturday they drove to Oxford, my wife had a great problem trying to see where the car park sign was actually pointing and after drriving round the roundabout three times thought it was down Castle Street and drove down there. Unforunately that is meant for buses only, so yesterday our big brother society in Oxford sent a demand for £30 with photagraphic evidence from three cameras. Maybe better signposting to the car parks would be better for tourists?

High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire is a town where there are empty shop units in the shopping centre and they need more visitors. Back in May 2011  I used to park in a car park close to the station. Putting in £5 in cash that would then run through till the next day.

On the 11th May I did this as normal. The machine drops down a ticket and you put it in a visable position inside the car by the windscreen etc. I did this, however somebody had just paid by credit card a couple of minutes before and the receipt was still in the machine. I obviously did not notice that my parking ticket and this receipt were stuck together.

On returning to collect the car later that day there was a parking fine attached to my car. £25 penalty. For a couple of months I tried battling this out with the authorities at Wycombe District Council, they would have none of this, I had displayed the wrong ticket and as you can see from above they look so similar. I even went to Bucks County Council Trading Standard and the District Councillor for car parking, but they would not move on it. In the end I had paid for 24 hours parking, but instead of it being £5 it cost me £30. I have never parked there since.

Wycombe District Council parking wardens are very hot on parking and I was told recently by someone working in a branch of a car parts shop that occasionally a customer has just purchased a new bike for example and needs st stop for a couple of minutes to load into the car. What do the friendly wardens do as the customer tries to get the new bike into their car, they issue a parking fine. Towns like High Wycombe need visitors, however the authorities are putting them off.

On a positive side however last Thursday they were not charging for parking in the Easton Street multi storey car park.

Marlow photo englishcottagerental.com

Marlow by the Thames also comes under Wycombe District Council, however parking is excellent, you can park for periods up to an hour in the High Street and the other main shopping street West Street. Why High Wycombe has to be so different is such a shame as Marlow is a great tourist centre.

Hopefully the Council does not greedy on parking and puts people off from visiting this town.

Update 3rd December 2012 - London Luton Airport again....

Flew in here by easyJet early yesterday evening. The full plane was on time, however no one about with steps to let passengers out. Approximately 10 minutes later they arrived at the airctaft's front and rear doors.

Went through passport control, plenty of officers and the "human" system was working much faster than the new automated sytem. Then went to collect the luggage. More than half an hour later it finally arrived. Seems like Luton Airport staff were asleep on an early Sunday evening in December. Hope they improve this very poor service when all the visitors fly in for Christmas.

Will they charge for using the toilets at Luton Airport next?

Luton Airport Departure Lounge early in the morning in July 2012
I have been using "London" Luton Airport for nearly 30 years now and seen the transformation from a small airport with an old terminal building to the much smarter building that houses it now.

Unfortunately for a visitor arriving in the country the welcome is not great. The approach from the planes is not too friendly.

Once you have crossed the tarmac there is not much in the way of covered walways and if it is a summer like 2012, people get very wet.
You have to walk up and down stairs often before reaching passport control, why when it is meant to be a modern building. All the internal walkways could be geatly improved with bright posters or pictures. After all visitors have not arrived in some eastern bloc country prior to 1989, but in 2012 Britain the place where the Olympics are being held.

Unlike most other international airports where you put a coin into the luggage trolley and get it back again, at Luton they keep it.

The person meeting you has waited half an hour in the car park and has to pay £7.20 for the priviledge (possibly higher than London Heathrow) and if he or she pays by credit card there is a surcharge on top.

When you are dropped off the person dropping you off has to pay a £1 or risk a fine for "Ilegal drop offs", to go through the Government security checks, they encourage you to pay for a "speedy clearance".

Once inside the terminal, if you go there early in the morning as I did on a Thursday in July around 7.30a.m there are so many people there you have to queue for the toilets.

In May this year easyJet said that "the infrastructure at Luton Airport must improve and old perceptions swept away". -"Passenger friendly terminal facilities – Reduce waiting times at security and immigration. Increase the number of stands to remove the need for bussing to planes, an improved terminal experience – more seating and retail on the way, not in the way."

The worry is that they will do a bit of tidying up and improving and possibly add further toilet facilities and do you know what, probably want to charge for using their "Speedy super loos".

Luton Airport needs to improve, but not by making its customers have to keep on putting their hands in their pockets every five minutes so the company running the airport can make larger profits.

Cannes self catering holiday rental available from 31st July

Now that the jmlvillas.com holiday rentals website is back in business after being "off the air" for a few hours today, we are pleased to promote this new arrival on the site.

A privately owened apartment with individual style and a superb view.

The apartment is located less than 1km from Palais des Festivals and located 150m from Cannes la Bocca train station - 3 minutes by train to the centre of Cannes.

This stylish apartment that sleeps four, situated on the Boulevard du Midi boasts magnificent, panoramic views of the Mediterranean encompassing the islands of St Honorat and Ste Marguerite as well as its impressive pool set within beautiful Italian gardens.

The Palais des Festivals and the famous La Croisette are a short walk away. Around Cannes are a number of medieval perched villages, including Mougins (about 10 minutes from Cannes once you get up to the autoroute), St-Paul-de-Vence, Antibes Old Town, and the famous perfume capital of Grasse.

There are also frequent boat excursions to St-Tropez, where every Tuesday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm, there is a large open-air market in the beautiful Place des Lices. There is also a Provençal market just 2 minutes from the residence.

Places to see nerarby:

Grasse - 21km. Considered the world’s capital of perfume and was made “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire” (town of art and history)

There are numerous old ‘parfumeries’ in Grasse, such as Molinard, Fragonard and Galimard, each with tours and a museum. An annual Fête du Jasmin or La Jasminade is held at the beginning of August.

Fact: Twenty-seven tonnes of jasmine are now harvested in Grasse annually.

Antibes Old Town - 14 km. The covered market (Marché Provençal) offers fresh products every morning except Monday, with a magnificent selection of meat, fish, cheese and vegetables.

Home also to the Picasso museum - for hardcore Picasso fans.

Cap d’Antibes is a beautiful and invigorating walk around the cape.

Mougins - 7km. Has a strong culinary history with such great chefs as Roger Vergé and Alain Ducasse having managed restaurants in the village. Both were synonymous with the restaurant L’Amandier, which is situated in the heart of the old village.

Mougins also hosts the annual ‘International Gastronomy Festival of Mougins’, or ‘Les Étoiles de Mougins’, an international gastronomic event taking place every September in the village.

The Mougins Museum of Classical Art (MMoCA) was opened in May 2011. Included in the museum are the works of Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne, Degas, Dalí, Dufy, Chagall, Derain, Lautrec, Yves Klein, Damien Hirst, (and so on.)

Fact: Pablo Picasso spent the last 12 years of his life living in Mougins (1961–1973), where he died.

St Paul de Vence - 26 km. One of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera, well known for its modern and contemporary art museums and galleries, in particular Fondation Maeght - its collection includes many important 20th century artists including Bonnard, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Fernand Léger and Joan Miró (among others) *http://www.fondation-maeght.com

Saint-Tropez - 70 km. Dubbed the ‘playground to jetsetters, fashion models, and millionaires’.

Tropezien beaches are located along the coast in the Baie de Pampelonne, topless sunbathing is now a usual way of sunbathing for both men and women - the Tahiti beach is now “clothing-optional”, but nudists often head to private, nudist beaches, like that in Cap d’ Agde.

It also hosts the most exuberant open air market in the whole of the Riviera; every Tuesday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm.

And much more: Provencal gastronomy, wineries, bakeries, chocolatiers, and high fashion.

Things to Do:
•Beautiful beach 100 meters

•Jet ski rental 2 km

•Cannes Garden Tennis Club 2 km

•Diving courses 50 meters

•Water skiing 300 meters

Living Spain and Destination France Summer 2012 editions now out

Just received the summer edition of Living Spain magazine and Destination France magazine.

Each magazine will cost £3.99 and they are very good value and full of intesresting features.

On the jmlvillas.com local south of France website www.cotedazurrental.com we have been given consent to publish some of the articles from that region over the years.

This summer editions features Normandy, with a city guide to Lyon, and what is on "Rendez-vous". I like the feature about Art DecoPosters that cost £395 each and give a fantastic impression of how travel used to be and featuring south of France locations like Cap D'Antibes, Cannes and Saint Tropez. This is an easy way to buy one of these. Another is to go to the Sunday market at Villefranche Sur Mer just outside Nice.

Living Spain magazine features about buying a country farmhouse and Tarragona and its wines.

Both magazines run jmlvillas and jml insurance ads in their directory sections. So if you are looking for more information about Spain and France, those seem to be the magazines to buy.

Prices at some Irish Holiday Homes are slashed for bank holiday

Just receved an emaily flyer from Dream Ireland, Ireland's specialist self catering holiday homes company.

They say that "Prices slashed for June Bank Holiday weekend" Well that is this coming weekend. It is referendum day in Ireland today and on Saturday 2nd June the bank holiday weekend starts. Just for a change the Irish bank holiday falls on the same day (4th June) as the British one because of the British late May bank holiday falling a week later because of the extra day on the 5th June for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations. New Zealand also has a bank holiday, but it is easier to get to Ireland  if you are living in Europe.

For some ten years now Dream Ireland Irish Holiday Home self catering rentals have been advertised on jmlvillas.com so why not take a look at the jmlvillas.com/Ireland section today? Follow this link

Is your holiday home rental in Spain, Greece or Ireland lying empty?

There is so much doom and gloom about (and that is not talking about the rather unpleasant weather in the south of England during the first couple of weeks of May) with news of uncertainty in Greece over their retaing the Euro, far too many properties empty in Spain and prices of property still very low in Ireland.

You might have a holiday home in one of these countries. If you have never considered letting it out to help pay some of the costs? (there are always costs involved even if you don't have mortgage - local taxes, maintenance etc).

Your holiday home might already be on the rental market, but you are not getting the bookings this year. People are watcing their money carefully before spending it on holidays.

There are solutions. One is to advertise it on www.jmlvillas.com . Oh no you say that means spending even more money. I have already booked advertising in this villa magazine and the Sunday something or other for 3 weeks and alltogether it has cost me a lot of money. Well advertising on jmlvillas.com won't exactly break the bank balance. Far from it. It costs about the same as 4 bottles of wine does in an average UK supermarket. Just £12.50 (that GBP Twelve pounds fifty pence) for ONE YEAR. That means the ad is there for all the year for thw world to view on the web.

There are plenty of information guides for owners and their guests as well.

If you are not getting the volume off booking that you got last year look at your prices. As stated earlier people are generally on much tighter budgets now and even though air travel, car hire and insurance are still very good value in many cases and even if the renter is coming from a country outside the Eurozone where exchange rates are good at the moment, they are concerned about extras when they arrive.

It is better to reduce your price a little than to leave the property empty.

jmlvillas.com has been promoting self catering holiday rentals for ten years now. All the dealing are carried out between property owner and renter and all the owner has to do is to pay for an exceptionally inexpensive advertisement. You add your own description room, by room, what to do in the area, 6 photos and your prices and change details whenever you want at no additional charge.

So don't leave the Greek, Irish or Spanish holiday rental empty( or any holiday rental in other countries),but list it today HERE

Why not go away and try to find some sun?

We have just had a miserable bank holiday weekend in England with temperatures not even reaching double figures centigrade in many parts of England. There is a picture on the front of this morning's Independent with a couple walking under an umbrella (not the sun variety) on a wind swept Brighton beach.

Mind you it has not only been wet in England. Talking earlier to someone who returned from south west France on Friday after a ten day break....it rained for eight of them!

So now is the time to think about a break. A weekend, a few days away. Temperatures on the early May bank holiday 7th May looked like this:

London 14, Edinburgh 10, Cardiff 12.  - Further afield Majorca was 20, Faro 19, Nice 18, Gibraltar 19, Malaga 22, Athens 24, Rhodes 25 and Barcelona 21. The UK forecast is for more rain this week so getting spring sunshine must be a priority for many people.

jmlvillas.com the self careting holiday rentals site that has been in operation for 10 years has a great selection of self catering holiday rentals to chose from in numerous countries worlwide and we are always lokking for mor properties.

It does not cost a lot to advertise GBP£12.50 A year! We don't take commission on bookings so anyone renting a self catering rental makes all their arrangements direct with the property owner. Very easy and staightforward.

You then book your own flights or take your car.
Find out more Here  Don't forget your travel insurance either......

Talking of travel insurance there are numerous advertising at jml-insurance.co.uk - Worldwideinsure, Direct Travel, Syaysure for the over 50's, Endsleigh, Simple, Essential travel, GreatCover.com, Multitrip.com and that is only just a few of them. Find them all HERE

There are numerous reasons for taking out travel insurance:

Personal Accident?
Abandon your holiday before you leave the UK
Catastrophe — fire, flood, earthquake or storm

Legal Advice
Mugging
Kidnap & Ransom

You should ensure that you check the individual uinsurance company's terms and conditiona fully.

Finally you might be hiring a car

At the insurance4carrental.com site there are now FOUR car hire insurance companies advertising - Economy Car Hire, rentalcars.com, carrentals.co.uk and Holiday Autos who have just celebrated  25 years in the business. They also offer Van Hire and Motorhome Hire. Details Here

The image to the left asks "Want to save £s,€s or $s on your car hire excess insurance?"

When you rent a car, you will find that your car rental agreement normally includes cover for Collision Damage Waiver - CDW (damage to the rental vehicle) and Theft. There is almost always an excess on the Collision Damage Waiver and Theft. You are however still liable for the Excess on CDW and Theft. When a rental car is damaged or stolen, the driver is asked to pay the first portion of the repair or replacement costs. This is known as the Excess.

Do you know that it could cost you £500 (approx €570 / $800) or more for any damage to your rental car? EVEN IF IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT!

jmlvillas.com starts wanted campaign for holiday rentals

jmlvillas.com the on line marketing service for self catering holiday rentals has today launched a campaign on it's holiday home web sites for more properties for the 2012 season.

Numerous enquiries are being made as the idea of a self catering holiday rental can save a family a lot of money.

jmlvillas.com/euro-rentavilla.com has now been established over TEN years and thousands of people have taken holiday rentals advertised on the site and partners euro-rentals, English Cottage Rental, Scottish Cottage Rental, Welsh Cottage Rental, Villa Rental France, Cote D'Azur Rental and euro villa location.

Advertising costs are so low and it only costs for ONE YEAR £12.50 including 20% UK VAT. You can't buy a lot for £12.50 these days, not even a bottle of Champagne for Vallentines day which today is.

So if you have a self catering holiday rental, the message is don't leave it empty. If you are already advertising it with other on line portalls, newspapers or magazines you are not actually "breaking the bank" by spending £12.50 for a year's advertising.

For anyone renting a holiday home, via two other websites in the jml Group, the renter can arrange holiday travel insurance, car hire and car hire excess insurance the property owner can arrange property insurance for that holiday rental.

Nice Airport to have third passenger terminal

Nice Airport which is the second busiest airport in France is expanding again. Extensions were completed last year to Terminal 2 and a brand new rental car terminal was opened last summer. (More on that here).

I see that The Riviera Times sent out an email newsletter on the 25th January saying  "New terminal announced for Nice Côte d’Azur Airport".

According to the newspaper's report It will be Situated between the current terminal 2 and the Var river, T3 will primarily welcome low-cost flights operators, such as easyJet, who want to speed up their turn-arounds between flights.

The airport says the major infrastructure works will cost 80 million euros. The proposed completion date will be in 2018 and it will not be as luxurious as terminals one and two being that it will be for the low cost market. See the rest of the article Here
